Simon Huggins Got a pre-release version of this, and it's incredibly haunting. The Voice and guitar style combo is a perfect droning style (in a good way! Fans of Matt will know!) The lyrics I am not so much in love with if I'm honest - bit teenage angsty for me - but voice and guitar together - fabulous. Just got myself a jawbone headset as well and it somehow seems even better on that! So given a little support and pre-ordered myself a copy as well! Looking forwards to your next collaboration, guys.

Ben Deutsch A beautiful collection of songs, expressed simply through voice, guitar, and some subtle use of electronic tones. The music moves forward with fluid momentum, occassionally swirling in a pool of sound before flowing on.

I just want to live I want to know what that feels like It's just something you hear about It's just something we dream about But we don't know it But we don't know it I just want to see Without this shroud in front of my eyes Death always lurks in the background And life just fades from the foreground I can't see through this to a better way I can't see through this to a better place I just want to live I want to feel connected to everything Is it just something you read about? Or is it something real? All around us All around us

Proud isolated city on the great lake so wide Where the colonial and ancient will always collide Where Reggie, Kyle, and Curran, and others of so few years Met a lonely death in the river of tears Oh, in the city of Thunder Bay, All this country’s shame will not be explained away Oh, in the city of Thunder Bay All our apologies won’t wash the suffering away Barbara Kentner was a mother on Ojibwe land Viciously killed by an occupier’s hand “I think I got one,” someone yelled as they took her down Another blow for white rule in this divided town Oh, in the city of Thunder Bay, Racism and hatred can’t be explained away Oh, in the city of Thunder Bay All our false remorse can’t erase the pain And we say that we’ve learned We’ll deal with you as equals But they say no, no, no We just can’t believe you After hundreds of years of tears And broken promises Why won’t we be better? Trust is long gone now in a land of broken dreams How can you strike a bargain with liars and thieves? Stand up for each other if you believe in what’s right Let’s drag this country forward, into the light Oh, in the city of Thunder Bay, All this country’s shame will not be explained away Oh, in the city of Thunder Bay All our apologies can’t wipe the suffering away Oh, in the city of Thunder Bay, Racism and hatred can’t be explained away Oh, in the city of Thunder Bay All our false remorse can’t take the pain away

Heal You 03:54
The years race by You start off slow, but then it's over And the ones you love All struggle through the same way But then there's those left behind Those with lives coloured a deep blue They never got started Suffering fills their days I wish with all my heart There was something I could do for you I wish with all my heart I could just wave a hand and heal you People come and go But I always tried to be here for you Even when you made it hard I never forgot that I love you Oh there's pain everywhere So much pain mixed with beauty There has to be some peace Beyond these endless tears I wish with all my heart There was something I could do for you I wish with all my heart I could just smile and heal you I wish with all my heart There was something I could do for you I wish with all my heart I could just take your hand and heal you

Clouds turn pink in the sky The story of you and I Waiting for that perfect moment Waiting for that perfect day You were always satisfied Just to be in this life Just to try to be good While I had this hunger burning inside And it made me do wrong It made me lose myself And I had to find a way Back into your soul

Red leaves, brown leaves on the ground As the year dies and the days grow cold I think of all the ones we've lost And I wonder what it was all for In the flood land, rising waters On the highland, looking downward All that I see is drowned All that we were is lost The years lie heavy, meaning won't come The wisdom I was promised, yet to manifest Yet there's something in the pulse all around me That tells me everything is one In the desert, flaming sunset In the heat, merciless penance All that I see is wrung out All that we were is lost In the sky, such indifference Glowing down, the eternal All that I see is wonder All that I see is one

about

Matt Borghi and Allister Thompson have been mutual admirers for some time, so it was natural that the ambient artist/occasional singer-songwriter and singer-songwriter/occasional ambient artist would eventually collaborate.

On this album they feature original songs written and sung by each, enhanced by one another’s contributions on guitar and bass. The collection is deep, dark, moody and philosophical, as befitting two brooding types residing in the snowy landscapes of Michigan and Ontario.

The album contains two (properly licensed) cover versions, Richard Thompson’s “Calvary Cross” and John Martyn’s “Hurt in Your Heart.”

"The Calvary Cross" by Richard Thompson (BMG/Platinum Songs)
"Hurt in Your Heart" by John Martyn (Catherine's Peak Music)

"River of Tears" is based on what is told in Tanya Talaga's book "Seven Fallen Feathers," and other sources, concerning the scourge of systemic anti-Indigenous racism and violence in Canada. It is offered as a sincere expression of remorse and a desire for radical change in Canada's relationship with Indigenous peoples.
