Spirit 04:01
I wander lost, my mind in a fog You were here one moment, then you were gone And I didn’t take the chance to properly say goodbye And say how happy I’d been that your life was twined with mine Are you here? A spirit amongst the trees Are you here? It’s almost as though you’re still with me The snow-covered ground looks the same as before My heart from me was so viciously torn And I don’t know how I’ll get through these days of pain My tears stream down, mixed with the freezing rain Are you here? Under low-hanging grey sky Are you here? Your eyes gaze steadily into mine Time to head home and find strength renewed You’ve joined all this, the beauty and the truth We all must leave, bound for lands unknown I’ll follow you one day, wherever your soul has flown I can still feel all the love I gave to you I can still feel it, and I know that you felt my love too Are you here? A spirit free amongst the trees Are you here? It’s almost as though you’re still with me

Luck 05:01
We’ve been many years together And there’s still some time to go There’s been sadness and there’s been joy So much left still to know I’ve tried to be my best for you Sometimes I know I’ve faltered You’ve been patient in those times Your faith in me never altered When the light calls and I close my eyes And resign myself to fate Just whisper to me about my luck To find myself in this state With someone to love me With someone to love me Your kindness and your beauty Sustained me through the years So be strong my only love When the time comes for tears Life can be mean, it can be cruel And the weight of time so hard to hold But beyond it all there’s only peace An endless glory unfolds When the light calls and you close your eyes The end of the long wait Just think about us and your luck To find yourself in this state With someone to love you With someone to love you When the light calls and you close your eyes The end of the long wait Just think about us and our luck To find ourselves in time and space With someone to love us

Karine Tremblay was a bright young girl Born in Saguenay She’d always had a dream To serve in Canada’s army Keeping peace around the world And setting people free So when they opened up to women In the 1970s Karine enlisted light of heart She’d serve her country well Little did she know she’d Entered the gates of hell Training was hard, but she was tough Her comrades encouraged her She made some good friends for life Her future seemed assured But Karine had a secret That was best kept hidden away For love between two women Was called a sin in those days They’d already tried to scour Her kind from the government halls But she never saw it coming How far her fortunes could fall One day they called her in And interrogated her They accused her of being many things A traitor and pervert She’d opened herself to blackmail By hostile foreign powers That was their insane excuse As they droned on for hours Oh no, she said, you’ll never make A traitor out of me Just because my love is different From the narrow view you see Karine wouldn’t give in And betray who she was So they ended her employment For the good of freedom’s cause They sent her to the psych ward For electroshock therapy She said I plan to take my own life As soon as I’m out of here But Karine Tremblay was born to fight So she fought bravely on Waiting tables in Montreal Her dreams and youth now gone It was only decades later Up on Parliament Hill They finally apologized For all the dreams that they killed Oh people of this cold, cruel land What demon tells you lies Till you crush all things so pure and good And choke them till they die All these people ever wanted Was to be themselves And to serve you however they could So you turned their lives to hell

Light 04:31
Hidden in darkness You walk the hills The grass is soft underfoot Trees black shadows You see the town far off Faintly glowing No distance voices call You are alone You are alone The light that threatens from afar Will never take you from a life among the stars Eternity above you Stretching all around You feel your soul lifted But you're held to the ground You're held to the ground The light that threatens from afar Will never take you from a life among the stars Let the ages pass and our time end Until it all begins again

Sleepless 04:06
You're searching for grace In a lifetime of small sins Boredom and distractions Obscure the light within You're working all day All week and all of your life No time to sit still and be Yet sleepless you walk the night In moments of clarity Visions of joys true and fair Call like childhood memory You reach out to the dreaming air Past the sleeping houses In the gaze of the stars above True meaning is calling you You know there is a perfect love I hear a voice, crying inside Don't let me die Release me

Jack Coffey 03:48
My name is Jack Coffey of old Newport town A sailor by trade, that’s the life that I’ve made And decades have passed since I first went to sea To lands full of fear, so bravely I’ve steered I’ve ploughed the salt main to the edge of the world Where the sun meets the moon and the stars sing strange tunes I’ve seen men without faces, men with no heads at all Monsters big as houses, they fly on great wings I’ve killed thousands of men with my knife and my gun There's so much blood upon me, Hell will not contain me But a curse was laid upon me by a far eastern king That never shall I find home, for all time must I roam And do you still wait for me there alone The girl that I wed threescore years ago I still carry your ring here with me Though my doom is to stay at sea

I'm tired of looking 'round, seeing nothing real Just the bricks and asphalt and those choking, dying trees Tired of electric light between me and the stars I'm heading somewhere new The years pass by you in a long and lonely blur Next thing you know, there's silver in your hair Time to make a change, before it gets too late I'm heading somewhere new Where the sun gleams down on the water And on the golden reach of sand And on the hills you can almost imagine The lion lies down with the lamb Farewell to you all, my family and friends Maybe I'll see you where all roads end You will find me where the stars glow at night I'm heading somewhere new

Let Go 04:25
Sunrise on a lonely mountain far away Trees lift up their boughs to greet another day Here deep in the concrete maze minds are heavy with care But another life is waiting for those willing to dare The path is overgrown but I can see it still Take a walk there with me, if you’ve got the will Out of the back door of your mind from the darkened cell To a new life waiting for you, the secret I will tell Let go, nothing to fear nothing to hide No future or past lies beyond your mind Beyond your mind It’s no mystery, the cure for this worldly blight Just take off the blinders now and restore your sight Let go, nothing to fear, nothing to hide No future or past lies beyond your mind

This is my final song Let it end here A little something I'll leave you with I never could rhyme well So I won't even try This is my final song Time to say — farewell I hope you can hear Some love in these words For I loved you well In my own way But there's a time to leave To face the unknown All I can offer you now Is this song May your life be long May there be light enough to see May you find something still, here That you've always longed for And remember me This is my final song My big send-off I guess no difference was made No lives changed By my small, small thoughts We all do our best And we'll never know What lies beyond Someday I'll see you there What lies beyond Maybe I'll see you there

Goodnight 02:05

about

"Goodnight from Horizon Rock" is a collection of songs that brings me back to the roots that originally inspired me: folk-rock, folk, and psychedelic folk music, with influences from early progressive rock. Fans of acts like The Strawbs, Moody Blues, The Waterboys, REM, Richard Thompson, The Byrds, The Smiths, The Church, and other jangly/mellotronic acts may find something to enjoy here.

The songs here are both new recordings of much older ones that mean a lot to me and brand-new ones informed by life's experiences of loss and love.

The album contains two cover versions, "Children's Crusade" by Kevin Coyne and "All I Wanna Do" by the Beach Boys.

"The Sorrows of Karine Tremblay" is based on the stories told in the excellent documentary "The Fruit Machine," which describes oppression of LGBTQ people in the Canadian government and military. The title character is a "composite" of the real experiences recounted in the documentary. thefruitmachine.ca
